ICANN held its second global public meeting of 2017 from June 26-29 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Brian Winterfeldt attended this meeting, along with several other attorneys from the practice. The Johannesburg meeting was framed as a “policy” meeting, focusing on cross-community activities rather than meetings of individual interest groups. Key topics from the meeting included rights protection mechanisms in the Internet domain name system; policies surrounding use of geographic names in domain names; and the impact of the European Union’s data privacy regulations that are due to be implemented in 2018.
